This interesting prayer was given in Kansas, USA, at the opening session of their Senate. It seems prayer still upsets some people. When Minister Joe Wright was asked to open the new session of the Kansas Senate, everyone was expecting the usual generalities, but this is what they heard:
“Heavenly Father, we come before you today to ask your forgiveness and to seek your direction and guidance. We know Your Word says: “Woe to those who call evil good”, but that is exactly what we have done. *
We have lost our spiritual equilibrium and reversed our values. *
We have ridiculed the absolute truth of Your Word and called it Pluralism. *
We have worshipped other gods and called it multiculturalism. *
We have endorsed perversion and called it alternative lifestyle. *
We have exploited the poor and called it the lottery. *
We have rewarded laziness and called it welfare. *
We have killed our unborn and called it choice. *
We have shot abortionists and called it justifiable. *
We have neglected to discipline our children and called it building self-esteem. *
We have abused power and called it politics. *
We have embezzled public funds and called it essential expenses. *
We have institutionalized bribery and called it sweets of office. *
We have coveted our neighbor’s possessions and called it ambition. *
We have polluted the air with profanity and pornography and called it freedom of expression. *
We have ridiculed the time-honored values of our forefathers and called it enlightenment.
Search us, Oh GOD, and know our hearts today; cleanse us from every sin and set us free. Amen!”
The response was immediate. A number of legislators walked out during the prayer in protest. In 6 short weeks, Central Christian Church, where Rev. Wright is pastor, logged more than 5,000 phone calls with only 47 of those calls responding negatively. The church is now receiving international requests for copies of this prayer from India, Africa and Korea. With the LORD’S help, may this prayer sweep over our nation and WHOLEHEARTEDLY become our desire so that we again can be called “ONE NATION UNDER GOD.”
Think about this: If you forward this prayer to everyone on your list, in less than 30 days it would be heard by the world.
Do you have the boldness to pass it on?
May the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob once again bless our Nation and it’s people.

When was this prayer?

hello Martha.
This event actually happened in the Kansas House (not Senate) in Topeka on January 23, 1996. Joe Wright is the pastor of Central Christian Church in Wichita and was guest chaplain that day. He prayed a prayer of repentance that was written by Bob Russell, pastor of Southeast Christian Church in Louisville, Kentucky. According to an article in the Kansas City Star from January 24, 1996, his prayer did stir controversy and one member of the legislative body walked out. Others criticized the prayer.
The controversy didn’t end there. Later that year in the Colorado House, Republican representative Mark Paschall angered lawmakers by using Joe Wright’s prayer as the invocation. Some members there also walked out in protest.
Paul Harvey did air the story and the prayer. He got such a large response that a phone number was set up to handle the calls. He’s aired it a couple more times since.
As Paul Harvey used to say “that’s the rest of the story….”
Martha, thank you for a great question. They are always greatly appreciated. I trust This answers your question….
May the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob bless you, and yours, eternally.
Yours in Christ;
Michael

Use to get stuff like this in emails. Had to investigate them. See you did.
First rate prayer. Sad that things have only gotten worst.

Hello, Tom; so good of you to drop by. Your comments and reblog of other peoples work is always appreciated. Thank you for all you do.
I did do some follow up research and found some interesting facts; some of which differ from the post. If you’re interested you might check out the comment section and review a conversation with Martha who asked “When was this prayer?” You’re right, it is an oldie but goodie; the prayer itself was delivered on January 23rd, 1996.
The prayer cuts wide open our nation’s inequity. Laying bare the soul of our nation so as to be condemned should we neglect to seek redemption.
Tom, again thank you for all you do and for our friendship.
May the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob bless you and your.
Yours in Christ;
Michael

This is an oldie, but a goodie. Since Thanksgiving Day is a government sponsored day of thanks, it is also sort of appropriate for Thanksgiving Day.
As the author of the post, altruistico (=> https://altruistico.wordpress.com/2017/11/22/opening-prayer-at-kansas-senate/#comment-9702), Minister Joe Wright actually gave the prayer in the Kansas House in 1996.
Here are some links to some of those urban legend investigators.

When you are setting at the table at Thanksgiving Day, consider this prayer. In addition to thanking God for what He has given us, let us also beg for His help in becoming His obedient servants.

It may be old, but there is still some truth here. It is a shame that we have only gotten worse.

Firstly, Wyld, I wish to thank you for your reblog of this post. That is greatly appreciated. Secondly, I wish to thank you for your comments. They too are greatly appreciated.
God said, “in the end of times I will turn man over to his reprobate mind” (Romans 1:28). Romans 1:28-32 states “Furthermore, just as they did not think it worthwhile to retain the knowledge of God, so God gave them over to a depraved mind, so that they do what ought not to be done. They have become filled with every kind of wickedness, evil, greed and depravity. They are full of envy, murder, strife, deceit and malice. They are gossips, slanderers, God-haters, insolent, arrogant and boastful; they invent ways of doing evil; they disobey their parents; they have no understanding, no fidelity, no love, no mercy. Although they know God’s righteous decree that those who do such things deserve death, they not only continue to do these very things but also approve of those who practice them”. Certainly there is much evidence of that.
May the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob bless you and yours.
Yours in Christ;
Michael
